What It’s Like To Sleep in a New Mattress
A new Orange County mattress is like a pair of new shoes, and it takes about 30 to 90 days for it to properly “break-in.” There will still be stiffness because it’s new and because of its newness, your body becomes uncomfortable too.
The mattresses are also subject to different shipping. Some mattresses are compressed in a box during delivery, so they are already “broken in” and arrives similar to how it felt when you tested it in the showroom. However, there are mattresses which are made of layers of foam and will only soften with continued use.
It doesn’t mean you should give up, not yet! There are things you can do to speed up the “break in” process so that your body can adjust to the new support system and for you to get restful sleep at night.
Tips to Properly Break In the New Mattress
1. Let it breathe. Don’t dress up your mattress with beddings as soon as it arrives. Allow oxygen to seep through it for a few hours.
2. Add some weight. For the mattress to conform to your body and for its materials to be flexible quickly, try to walk on it a few minutes each day. If yours is a memory foam, step on it several times. If you got an innerspring mattress, make sure to use both hands and feet to prevent damaging or shifting the springs.
3. Be Patient. Spending time in your mattress even if you aren’t sleeping allows the mattress material to soften and flex.
4. Warm it up. Bringing the room temperature a few degrees higher will make your mattress softer especially if you purchased a memory foam.
What if the break in period didn’t do any good?
If you still feel numbness, stiffness, or tingling sensation on your hips os shoulders after breaking in your mattress, that suggests that your body needs a softer mattress. If you feel lower back pain or discomfort, you might need a firmer support system.
