Don’t Skip Your Beauty Sleep

Everybody has heard that we should sleep more, but the latest findings on sleep and skin care might just convince you to make a stop at an Orange County mattress store. What could be so compelling?

The Formula For Great Skin

Among sleep’s many benefits is the naturally occurring period of “deep sleep” during each shuteye session, which allows the body to repair and rebuild any damaged tissues.  With all the stress you put your skin through in a typical day–everything from makeup, to sun exposure, to pollution–”repair and rebuild” time is vital to keep your complexion looking youthful and fresh.  But it turns out that making new skin cells isn’t all that your body is doing when you’re in the sack.

Increased Circulation

When you’re tired, you don’t just feel irritable and groggy.  Being under-slept can actually impair your circulation, leaving your skin looking dull.  Anyone who has ever awakened with under-eye bags can also attest that impaired circulation leaves you looking puffy and exhausted.  How to repair this?  While concealers, cold water washes, and other techniques can temporarily mask the problem, the best solution is to drink lots of water and get to bed earlier.

How To Sleep Better

Sure, you’d like to get more sleep–who doesn’t want better skin?  But in our busy modern world it can sometimes be difficult to get the rest we need.  Between busy job schedules, family commitments, and the craving for a little downtime, it can seem like there aren’t enough hours in the day or night.  Here are a few tips for taking care of your skin and getting your sleep in, even with a busy schedule.

  • Go to bed at the same time every night

  • Apply your skin care products before bed, to allow them to work overnight.

  • Avoid screens for 1-2 hours before you go to bed.

  • Sleep in a dark, cool, quiet room.

  • Use a quality mattress–if yours is more than 10 years old, it probably needs to be replaced.

  • Practice meditation, yoga, or aromatherapy for their relaxing, sleep-inducing effects.

Better skin doesn’t have to come from a fancy product line or be purchased at the dermatologist’s office.  Sometimes, the solution to your skincare woes is already within your grasp.  Make sure you’ve got a great mattress.
